In many AFCON tournaments, the host country appears to enjoy unfair protection:
- Referees hesitate to issue yellow or red cards to host players, even after repeated fouls
- Opponents are punished more harshly for minor infractions
- Home crowds and political pressure seem to influence decisions
This creates a dangerous narrative: โIf you want to win AFCON, just host it.โ
2. Referee Bias and Fear
Many referees officiating AFCON matches:
- Appear intimidated by home fans
- Avoid decisions that may anger the host nation
- Compensate by punishing visiting teams more severely
Opponents end up playing in fear โ scared to tackle, scared to protest, scared of cards โ while hosts play aggressively with little consequence.
3. Same Problems, Different Hosts
This is not about one country.
The same pattern repeats regardless of who hosts:
- Fans from different nations complain about the same officiating style
- The same โhome favoritismโ allegations follow every host country
- This consistency makes it look systemic, not accidental
Thatโs why trust is collapsing.
4. Poor Use of VAR
VAR, which should correct injustice, often:
- Is ignored during controversial moments
- Is applied selectively
- Fails to protect visiting teams
When technology exists but is not used transparently, it worsens suspicion instead of fixing problems.
5. CAFโs Silence
Confederation of African Football rarely:
- Publicly reviews referees after controversial matches
- Suspends officials involved in clear errors
- Communicates transparently with fans
Silence from leadership fuels anger and conspiracy theories.
6. AFCONโs Image Is Bleeding
Africa Cup of Nations should be a celebration of African excellence.
Instead, many fans now watch with:
- Distrust
- Anger
- Low expectations of fairness
Some no longer believe matches are decided by merit.
The Harsh Truth Fans Believe
โThe best way to win AFCON is to host it.โ
Whether true or not, the fact that so many fans believe this is already a massive failure for CAF.
What Must Change (Urgently)
- Neutral referees from non-regional blocs
- Automatic post-match referee reviews
- Transparent VAR communication
- Equal ticket access for away fans
- Public accountability from CAF
